Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Viewing Distance for a convex mirror calculated?

To calculate viewing distance, measure the distance from the viewer to the mirror, then add the distance from the mirror to the area you want to see. First, measure from the area you are viewing, to where the mirror will be positioned. Next, measure from the mirror position to the area you wish to view. Add these two measurements together to calculate the optimal viewing distance.

What size safety mirror do I need?

The optimal mirror size depends on your viewing distance, the amount of detail you want to see, the viewing angle required and for driveways, the speed of approaching traffic. Use your calculated viewing distance to pick a base size, then adjust for traffic speed and other details, using this guide:

For Indoor Spaces:

  • To view staff and pedestrians in small rooms, and around tight corners: 300mm to 450mm or larger
  • To view medium spaces and check for forklift movement: 600mm to 800mm or larger
  • To safely view large busy areas and larger machinery movements: 800mm to 1000mm

For Driveways and Machinery Speed:

  • Low Speed (10–30 km/h): 300mm to 450mm or larger
  • Medium Speed (40–60 km/h): 600mm to 800mm or larger
  • High Speed (70–100 km/h): 800mm to 1000mm (no smaller)

For standard blind corners, a round mirror works best. If you need a 180-degree view to see both left and right, use a Two-Way Half Dome mirror. If the viewing distance in both directions is more than 12 metres, installing two standard round mirrors angled in each direction is the best option. For forklift drivers to maneuver safely around high shelving with multiple intersections, a large ceiling dome gives a 360-degree viewing angle.

How is the mirror mounted?

DuraVision standard round mirrors are sold complete with adjustable wall-mounting J-Brackets, whereas indoor half domes and ceiling domes include dome capped crews and a suspension kit to position ceiling domes at an optimal height. Specific installation guides can be found in the Specification tab on our product pages. Standard inclusions are:

Note: Wall-mounting screws/bolts are not supplied for outdoor mirrors. You can purchase 60mm U-bolts or 75mm U-bolts separately to mount J-bracket mirrors to a pole.

Which mirror material is best: Acrylic, Stainless Steel, or Glass?

The best material depends on your environment: Acrylic is ideal for cost-effective general use, Stainless Steel is virtually unbreakable for vandal-prone areas or at risk from heavy machinery, will not rust in coastal areas or sterile environments, and Glass is obsolete due to safety hazards.

  • Acrylic (100% Virgin Optical Grade): Lightweight, shatter-resistant, and UV-stabilised so it will not turn yellow or cloudy. It can scratch if cleaned with harsh chemicals.
  • Stainless Steel (Grade 304 Electro-Polished): Virtually unbreakable, vandal-proof, highly weather-resistant for coastal zones, and easy to clean without scratching, though it carries a higher initial cost.
  • Glass: DuraVision no longer manufactures glass mirrors due to safety, breakage hazards, and weight.
